Today we travel up to Warwickshire for the start of this short break holiday, stopping on the way.

We're off to Shackerstone Station this morning for a ride on the Battlefield Line Railway, a return jounrey of around an hour. Here you can enjoy the very essence of a country branch line with steam, diesel and railcar trains taking you back to an earlier age.

In the afternoon we'll explore the National Forest area with lovely old market towns and villages such as Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Melbourne and Tutbury, with its noble castle ruin.

Believe it or not, Birmingham has more canals than Venice, so our morning is spent heading out from the bustling centre of England's second city on a peaceful boat journey along some of those canals. It's a whole different way of seeing urban landscapes, industrial buildings and modern developments. We should be back with a bit of time to spend in Birmingham's busy cosmopolitan city centre before begining our journey back to Brighton.
