Cheshire's Rivers, Houses and Gardens

Cheshire's Rivers, Houses and Gardens

We will take a leisurely journey to our hotel with a couple of stops along the way. We will then enjoy our first evening together with dinner in the hotel.

Today, we make the short journey from the hotel to stunning Tatton Park, Gold Winner of Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2014 at Visit England's Awards for Excellence. Uncover centuries of history and witness life above and below stairs in the Mansion, surrounded by one of Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction. We include a fabulous 60-minute “Mr. New & Mrs. Cork” Mansion guided tour. This special costumed butler & housekeeper tour of the Mansion is led by entertaining guides with an insight into Tatton's unique history and special features, tales from the estate and of the lives of the Egerton family and workers who lived here.

Our journey today takes us to Ness Botanic Gardens. A famously relaxing and beautiful award-winning garden set in a gorgeous location, it is one of Cheshire’s flagship Gardens of Distinction and venue for BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time Summer Garden Party. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served on arrival followed by a 90 minute guided tour of the gardens led by a knowledgeable and friendly volunteer guide.

In the afternoon we will visit Chester. A gem of a city, awash with history and heritage with a gentle medieval air. From the cobbled paths to the spire of the glorious ancient cathedral, Chester offers buildings of every era, each carefully restored to retain an old world backdrop to the modern day bustle of vibrant city life. Chester is home to the unique 13th Century two-tiered half-timbered galleried shops known as The Rows and the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain.

After which we will return to hotel for dinner together

We head to Anderton Boat Lift where we can peek at the area's industrial past at this waterside wonder, the only one of its kind in the UK! Travel through the unique and impressive structure, one of the greatest monuments to Britain’s canal age and known as the ‘Cathedral of the Canals’. We have a combined trip of a 40 minute river cruise along the Weaver Navigation looking at the industrial heritage of Northwich plus a 40 minute boat trip through the heart of the Anderton Boat Lift to the Trent & Mersey Canal above

In the afternoon, we visit nearby Arley Hall & Gardens, a place of enormous character, charm and interest. The Hall is an impressive example of a Victorian country house built in the Elizabethan style. The Gardens, which are amongst the finest in Britain, are outstanding for their vitality, variety and historical interest and are particularly celebrated for the magnificent double herbaceous border.

After enjoying our final breakfast together we will begin our journey home to Brighton.
