Hatfield House

Hatfield House

Built in 1611 by Robert Cecil the 1st Earl of Salisbury, Hatfield House is a spectacular example of Jacobean craftmanship. Visitors can explore the state rooms and wonderful gardens, stopping to see the latest addition the 'Renaissance' water feature in the North Front of the house.

Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, built this house in 1611. Jacobean craftsmanship is everywhere, like the Grand Staircase and stained glass windows in the private chapel. As you go through the state rooms and private apartments you'll notice many mementos collected over the centuries by the Cecil's, one of England's foremost political families.

The Coach House Restaurant has a varied menu, and there's a whole retail village in the Stable Yard. The stables are all that remains of the Old Palace, and it was here in 1558 that Elizabeth I, affectively under house arrest, learned of her accession to the throne.
